Will Bower, LIAR (UPDATED)

Cross-posted at Clintonistas for Obama.

Remember this video of Will Bower, a leader in the PUMA movement, announcing that the PUMA's didn't need Obama's help raising money for Hillary?

Guess how much money she actually raised in July:  $2.5 million.

What happened to that $6 million, Mr. Bower?  I'll tell you what happened.  It never existed.  But admitting that his coalition wasn't raising money quickly enough wouldn't get him on Fox News, would it?

I have friends who are PUMAs and I will not renounce or criticize them for their decisions.  I've tried to keep my ties to them and that won't change.  But the leaders of this movement are LIARS.  First we have Darragh Murphy reneging on her promise to provide buses to Denver and infighting about misusing funds.  Now we have Will Bower making up fake numbers.

Did Mr. Bower ever stop to think that spreading these lies might make it harder for Sen. Clinton to raise money?  Of course not.  Because this isn't about Hillary Clinton.  It's about Will Bower.  And Will Bower being interviewed on television.  And Will Bower becoming famous for taking down Obama and handing over the White House to McCain.

The PUMAs have raised a lot of very legitimate concerns about the nominating process and the need to reform the party.  But when their megalomaniac leaders go around making ridiculous claims like $6 million and a "whitey" tape and 500 buses to Denver, it casts a shadow over the movement and lessens our chances of getting the reform we need.

To my friends on the other side, please ditch your narcissistic leaders and join the Clintonistas for Obama.  This is the path that Hillary has chosen and has asked us to walk with her.  I'm with Hillary.  How about you?

Ashamed and extremely embarrassed to have been suckered by the McTrolls working for their McPoints.

What a smackdown (2.00 / 10)

I was always shocked at how weak PUMA advocates on this site were when it came to the unanswerable questions--doesn't McCain oppose everything Clinton stands for?  Didn't the Clinton campaign sign off on the MI/FL sanctions? etc--but I thought their leaders would have some better answers.

Nope.

I always thought the $10 million was an exaggeration, and I thought that he was taking credit for other money.  But $2.5 million?  And that's not including the money she got ON HER OWN.  I made two donations to her in July and both were in response to emails from Hillary.

The whole thing makes me sick.

These frauds never were Democrats to start with! I'm really starting to think that other than the VERY few disillusioned and now deluded Hillary supporters (think Alegre or Riverdaughter), the rest of the PUMA McTroll leadership was never involved with Hillary's campaign to start with. I just find it pitiful that they've been able to convince Alegre and Riverdaughter and all the rank and file PUMA McTrolls that they're in some mass movement to "save democracy"... When they've really been conned by second-rate con artists.

OK he's an ass, and probably a crook.

But I  empathize with the many, many non-insane Hillary supporters who must be cringing watching the image of Hillary supporters being hijacked by these mouthy, nasty slimy individuals giving both their candidate and battering  the wishes and dreams of women who wouldn't dream of saying a fraction of the stuff posted on talkleft and similar sites, but who had wistful or practical hopes of something better out of this.

This kind of crap also obscures those things that could be done which would in fact soothe the hurt and help them go forward with us in November in an alternative way of getting what they had hoped it would be Hillary doing for them.

And will make it harder for No. 2 to come forward without having to bend over backward ala Wright to demonstrate she is not a party-trashing kook. It even soils the decent name of those who worked for the interests of women by flaunting the stereotype of the whiny, bitchy complainer who does that and neither raises the money nor marches the troops necessary to support a modern campaign, preferring to wail about Hussein, how immature and inexperienced he is, etc etc. Angry Mouse and all the other sensible, decent, wounded Hillary supporters deserved better than this.

And it's (excuse me) a guy who's fronting all this. geez.

According to a Clinton spokesman who checked into the specific allegations that PUMA or Just Say No Deal raised 6 million for Hillary Clinton--It never happened.  And by all accounts they technically didn't raise any of the 2.5 million either.

No contributions were ever received from PUMAPAC or Just say no deal.  If folks clicked on a link to Hillary Clinton's website (through the puma site) and then donated it wouldn't show up as a PUMA contribution.  But the people who donated directly to PUMA to help Hillary's debt--none of that money made it to her.  Unbelievable.

Will Bower:

We at JustSayNoDeal.com, we started an initiative before the Fourth of July to raise money to put down her debt. And within that week leading up to the Fourth of July we raised approximately $10 million. Our most conservative estimates have it at six million but we're looking more at $10 million. Our sources tell us that the debt is now less than $5 million from being in the black... we believe that by this weekend that Hillary's debt will be finished.

In other words, "don't worry, we've got it covered."  What a schmuck.

http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/summar y.php?cycle=2008&cid=N00000019

I mean really, even he should be smart enough to know that is a total number which would include primary and general election funds which are no longer usable.

Or maybe he was trying to take credit for this number:

PAC contributions $1,365,179 1%

That's a laugh.  If you read grlpatriots above posting, he's obviously trying to give the PUMA's the runaround and they will be naive enough to believe it.

I obviously don't trust him, but when he went around clucking about how he had paid down Hillary Clinton's debt, I believed him.  Why would you lie about something that's so easily verifiable?

And yet, there it is.  I'm sure it did real damage: I donated all I felt I could spare (and still help towards the presidency, down ticket races, etc.) early on, so it made no difference to me, but I'm sure there are people who sat on their hands thinking that the problem was solved.

Re: Will Bower, LIAR (UPDATED) (2.00 / 2)

I don't think Will Bower was purposely distorting anything.  Why would he, knowing full well that numbers would come out at the end that would show how much was raised?  Maybe someone was lying to him, and maybe not.  Maybe it was difficult to track how much money was coming in from all different groups and doners.  Obama wasn't going to help her pay down her debt to any extent.  When he asked his supporters to help her, they handed over a paltry amount of money anyway.

Re: Will Bower, LIAR (UPDATED) (2.00 / 2)

And why wouldn't he distort it?  It fits in with the usual PUMA hubris. Since the money didn't come from their PAC $6,000,000 or even $20 would be a completely unverifiable claim.  Only money that moves through PACs can be traced.

And this:

When he asked his supporters to help her, they handed over a paltry amount of money anyway.

...is untrue because there were plenty of Obama supporters who wrote diaries on here and other sites asking other supporters to help with Clinton's debt in the interest of party unity.  Many of the best folks on this site contributed without hesitation.

But it is rather ironic that your claim of a "paltry amount of money" is just as unverifiable as Bower's claim of $6,000,000.  Why would he lie or grossly exaggerate?  For the same reason you just did, because you can and it fits in with your agenda.

Enough (1.50 / 2)

Will is a personal friend of mine from real life, not the internet or this silly blog.  He's a good man and has spent many years contributing to Democratic causes.

If you take issue with his stance, fine.  But stop making him out to be Satan, especially when you do not know him personally.

Re: Enough (2.00 / 1)

Your friend is a public figure and made some serious misstatements.  If he can't take the heat, he needs to step off the stage and crawl back under his rock.

crawl back under a rock (none / 0)

Drew, I'm deeply disappointed in how you've conducted yourself in this diary. Actually, I'm saddened and surprised by your viciousness toward Will even after I've set the record straight.

Re: crawl back under a rock (2.00 / 1)

You haven't set the record straight.

I am angry at Will Bower for latching onto Hillary's name and trying to ride it into the spotlight.  He's been dishonest in his public statements.  That's not a smear.
